You may remember that last week, I introduced a new monthly feature at Roscoe Ramblings entitled Local Spotlight. The spotlight for August is on Axium Foods of South Beloit.
Back in early June, I noticed that Axium's newest line of chips called Mystic Harvest was available at my local Woodman's Market. Since a 7oz. bag retails there for just $1.89, I decided to give them a shot. My entire family, including my daughters, were all impressed. Consequently, I was thrilled when the folks from Mystic Harvest recently contacted me about doing a review/giveaway on my blog.
What are Mystic Harvest tortilla chips?
The folks at Axium Foods recognized the opportunity to create a better-for-you snack chip. The chips are made from Suntava Purple Corn and come in two varieties:

All natural
No preservatives
Made with non GMO ingredients
No hydrogenated oils
No trans fat
Gluten Free
Added Fiber
ORAC Score: 6,000
Multi Grain (On right):
All natural
No preservatives
Made with non GMO ingredients
No hydrogenated oils
No trans fat
Added fiber
ORAC score: 6,000
The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) Score is the amount of antioxidants in a particular food item. The higher the score, the higher the amount of antioxidants. ORAC scores are based on a serving size of 100 grams. For comparison's sake, the ORAC score of an apple (100 gram serving size) is 3898. The ORAC score for blueberries (100 gram serving size) is 4669.
What did I think?
To be honest, I couldn't really tell much of a difference between the Sea Salt variety and the Multi Grain variety. The Sea Salt variety did taste a tad bit saltier, but it wasn't overpowering. Both varieties were very flavorful. Since they're quite thick and crispy, you won't have to worry about them breaking apart as you're (double?) dipping them into your favorite salsa or guacamole. To me, they tasted much more substantial than a traditional tortilla chip.
Where to buy?
Local readers can purchase Mystic Harvest tortilla chips at Woodman's. At Woodman's, I found them in the Natural Food aisle. In the Milwaukee area, they can be found at Sendik's. They're also available at select smaller grocers in Minnesota. If none of those options work for you, you can order a case of (6) 7oz. bags online for $21. That cost includes shipping to anywhere in the continental US, but excludes the 1% sales tax. The suggested retail price is $3.39 per 7oz. bag. Retailers are able to set their own retail price, which is why I paid $1.89 at Woodman's.
The final verdict:
Not only are Mystic Harvest tortilla chips made by a local, family owned company, they're also much better for you than many of the other alternatives sitting on store shelves today. Best of all, they're affordable! I will definitely continue to purchase these.
What's next?
Next week, I'll be sharing a recipe for grilled nachos made with Mystic Harvest chips.
Extra fun:
Mystic Harvest has bald eagles living in their backyard! How neat is that? Be sure to check out the videos on their website.
Giveaway:
One lucky winner will receive (6) bags of Mystic Harvest Sea Salt chips and (6) bags of Mystic Harvest Multi Grain chips. Open to US residents only. Shipment is via UPS.
Easy Rafflecopter entry!
Disclosure:
In the interest of full disclosure, Axium Foods sent me 12 bags of their Mystic Harvest Purple Corn Tortilla Chips to test and review. No monetary payment was received, and all opinions are my own.

I don't really eat chips very often so when I do, I look for something indulgent. However, my boyfriend has a chip habit and eats them constantly so I try to buy healthy chips for him.
ReplyDeleteI'm vegan so I'm always looking for a better for you choice. I can't find blue chips in our local store anymore. Thanks for this info and Giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI just go for flavor - we don't eat too many chips and normally we eat very healthy food, so it's okay to indulge.
ReplyDeleteIt depends. If I'm on a diet it is always healthier choice but usually it is indulgent one. When I snack I want something that satisfies a junk craving.
